Hikes in Queenstown

One of our favourite activities in Queenstown, once the adrenaline junkies were satisfied, was hiking or as the Kiwis call it “tramping” on the many, many spectacular “tracks” or trails in the area. They ranged in length from 2 hours for the Sunshine Bay track…

to 3 hours for the Queenston Hill…

to 5 hours for the Moonlight track all the way up to 6.5 hours for Ben Lomond.

Kiwis don’t measure their hikes by distance but by time which we initially found a bit confusing. In the end, we understand, as the distance is only a piece of the puzzle. The change in elevation is the biggest determinant of effort for the climb. If this all begins to sound a bit like physics, it is. We had lots of lessons on our hikes…biology, physics and most definitely photography.
