Ben Lomond Hike
A few students and staff hiked the challenging Ben Lomond Hike today. We started the hike by taking the gondola up to the top of the Queenstown skyline to save an uphill climb at the beginning of the hike. Sunshine, a spectacular view of Lake Wakatipu and craggy mountain tops made this difficult hike a memorable experience.
The out and back trip took approximately 4 hours, nearly 30,000 steps, 12.5 km and a change in elevation of approximately 1500 metres. At times, we had to scramble up rocky inclines and some of us were a bit affected by the high altitude. The track gets steeper and rougher as it approaches Ben Lomond’s 1748 m summit.
The view included Mt Earnslaw/Pikirakatahi and Mt Aspiring/Tititea. Students and staff returned to the hotel tired and a bit stiff and sore but ready to tackle the next New Zealand adventure.
