TERM FOUR ITINERARY
Monteverde • Arenal • Playas del Coco • Puembo • Amazon • Otavalo • Lima • Sacred Valley • Cusco
From the rainforests of Costa Rica to the breath-taking vistas of Peru, South and Central America will captivate your imagination and challenge your perceptions. During Term Four of Global High School, you’ll experience new heights, new foods, new languages, and new friends.
We will begin our adventure in Monteverde, Costa Rica. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is home to thousands of species of plants and animals. Learn about cloud forest ecology and take a guided night hike through the reserve. Nearby, visit Arenal Volcano National Park to learn about the country’s most active volcano, and relax in the area’s hot springs before heading to Playas del Coco. It seems like a sleepy seaside town at first glance, but once you’ve familiarized yourself, you’ll find that it’s a friendly and lively place where tourists easily mix with locals and other travellers from around the globe. At night, the central plaza fills with people, food, laughter, and dancing in the true pura vida spirit.
Say goodbye to Costa Rica and head south to Ecuador. Our inland tour will include a stop in Puembo to study in the picturesque public parks and squares, and wander the local markets filled with fresh foods and artisanal treasures.
We then head into the Amazon basin to experience a wildlife adventure of a lifetime—believed by many to be home to the most diverse ecosystem in the world, with thousands of species of plants, animals, fish, and insects. Hike along jungle trails, study poolside and take in the views from your terrace while chattering troops of monkeys swing by.
Move to the northern town of Otavalo to browse the popular Otavalo Market, known for its vibrant, Ecuadorian woven products, which can be bartered and brought home as souvenirs of your incredible time abroad.
Our adventure continues in Peru, a country world-renowned for its ancient archaeological sites, including the famed Machu Picchu, and for its vibrant culture. Experience Lima, the country’s bustling capital where a bustling metropolis exists within an ancient city.
Travel through the Sacred Valley to the breathtaking site of Machu Picchu, hike amid a cloud forest and stone cliffs, and explore the history of Incan civilization. In the lively city of Cusco in the southern Andes, become acquainted with the area’s culture and history. Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire and reflects its rich history with illuminating museums, striking architecture, and Inca ruins. Immerse yourself and take it all in before final exams and a celebration of your unforgettable year abroad with a farewell banquet.

Donations (new and used) will be of benefit to many organizations, schools and community centres in the areas that we visit. Items such as school supplies, table games and puzzles (of various difficulty), paint by numbers, books and art materials are needed. Clothing donations will also be accepted.
