Semester One Itinerary

Oxford • London (day trip) • Barcelona • Rome • Florence (day trip) • Crete • Athens • Beijing • Siem Reap • Luang Prabang • Chiang Rai • Ko Lanta • Ayutthaya

Europe
Roam the hallowed halls of Oxford University, gaze upon great works of art and world-famous landmarks, visit castles and palaces, and see the seat of the Roman Empire with your own eyes. During Term One of Global High School, you’ll experience the best culture and history Europe has to offer.

Begin this term studying abroad in one of the United Kingdom’s most impressive seats of learning: Oxford. Enjoy a true university experience in Oxford, the city of dreaming spires, and take up residence at St Hilda’s College, the perfect home base for exploring this historic university. Visit the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, punt down the River Cherwell, and take day trips to London, Bath and Stonehenge.

Head south to the Mediterranean shore and wander through the beautiful quarters of Barcelona, immersing yourself in Catalan language, culture, and cuisine. Sun yourself at the glamorous Sitges Beach; be awestruck by examples of Antoni Gaudí’s architecture, including the Sagrada Família and Park Güell; and study the riches of the Picasso Museum.

Take wing over the north of the Tyrrhenian Sea and descend in ancient Italy! Enjoy the grandeur of Rome and visits to the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum and Roman Forum, and a day trip to Florence – the birthplace of the Renaissance and home to our Italian campus. Stop in and say hello to our staff and students before departing eastward across the Adriatic to Greece, the cradle of Western civilization.

Acclimate yourself to Greek culture on Crete, the country’s largest island, where you can rejuvenate on dazzling beaches, and swim in clear blue waters. Head to the mainland and the iconic Athens, where you can feast your eyes upon the Agora and the Temple of Zeus, before closing the chapter on this leg of your global adventure.

Asia
Explore the bustling cities of Beijing, be awed by sacred temples in Cambodia and Thailand, trek through spectacular mountain scenery, and take a riverboat cruise from Laos to Thailand. During Term Two of Global High School, you’ll experience fascinating cultures, ancient ceremonies, astounding architecture, and modern city life all while you earn two Ontario Secondary School credits.

The journey beings in China’s capital city of Beijing, both a modern and ancient place to explore. From the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the National Museum of China, everything tells an incredible story. Beijing is an ever-evolving megacity of over 21 million that is home to seven separate UNESCO World Heritage sites; 91 Universities, a variety of palaces, temples, parks, gardens and tombs; a thriving cultural and arts scene; and much, much more. It is impossible to be bored in this buzzing metropolis – every turn brings new adventures, sights, and sounds.

Step out of the city and into the lush jungles of Cambodia, Another short flight brings us to the incredible country of Cambodia. The centrally-located Siem Reap will be your home base, as you travel to the vast temple complex of Angkor Wat, and surrounding monuments – from Ta Prohm, a temple enveloped in huge tree roots; to Bayon, decorated with huge carved smiling faces. Before you leave the country, take time to visit the Landmine Museum and learn about the horrifying history of the Khmer Rouge.

Dive back into the ancient world in Laos, and the town of Luang Prabang. Tour the most spectacular of over 30 Buddhist temples, see shrines decorated in gold, covered in intricate carvings and inhabited by orange-clad monks, and get your thrills on a zip line through the jungle and a hike to stunning waterfalls.

Leave the roads behind and take the scenic route to Thailand on a boat cruise along the Mekong River. Start from the top in Chiang Rai Province, where we’ll trek into the surrounding hills to see tribal villages. Further south, you’ll discover the island of Ko Lanta. Spectacular white sand beaches stretch along the west sunset coast. Students will spend the days having class on the sand and snorkelling in the clear blue waters before heading back inland to the breathtaking Ayutthaya, where the ruins of the old city form an archaeological site that contains palaces, Buddhist temples, monasteries and statues, the perfect place to bid farewell to an awesome term two in Asia.

TERM ONE OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS

Jack the Ripper Tour (London)

Jack the Ripper TourHe came silently out of the midnight shadows on August 31, 1888. Watching. Stalking. Butchering raddled, drink-sodden East End prostitutes. Leaving a trail of blood and gore that led…nowhere. Yes, something wicked this way walked, for this is the Ripper’s slashing grounds. We evoke that autumn of gaslight and fog – of menacing shadows and stealthy footsteps – as we inspect the murder sites, sift through the evidence – in all its gory detail – and come to understand the main suspects.

Going on this walk is as close as you’re going to get to nailing the Ripper. This is the best walk of its kind, as it was master-minded, and frequently led by Donald Rumbelow, who is “internationally recognized as the leading authority on Jack the Ripper.” Britain’s most distinguished crime historian, Rumbelow is the author of the definitive book on the Ripper, the best-selling The Complete Jack the Ripper. He’s been the chief consultant for every major film and television adaptation of the Ripper for the last 25 years.

During a full day trip to the Catalan side of the mountain range (separating France from Spain), you will discover these treasures and they will take your breath away.

Getting an early start, you will travel away from Barcelona to the ancient settlement of Vic for a look at some beautiful renaissance and baroque buildings. Your journey will then take you even further north towards the Pyrenees, passing oak and red pine forests and castles which have been around since before the first millennia.

You will then head to the town of Ripoll, formerly home to the first Count of Barcelona, before moving on to Queralbs, 1,236m above sea level with only 200 inhabitants.

Finally, you will travel the last 6km to your end destination, only accessible by a special railway track which will carry you into Valle de Nuria, surrounded by 7 glacier peaks doing their utmost to hide the almost heavenly valley 2,000 meters above sea level. There you will be able to hike around the lake, explore the valley on trails with different levels of difficulty, or just relax and enjoy the views.

Please bring sunscreen, water, and a jacket for the cooler temperatures at the mountaintop (there may be some snow on the ground!) and wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. Please bring a picnic lunch and snacks, though there will be places to purchase food. Don’t forget your camera!

Ostia Antica & Ostia Beach (Rome)

Ostia excursionA visit to Ostia is a relaxing day out that will take you away from the hustle, bustle and noise of Rome.

In the morning, with our guide, we’ll explore the expansive site of Ostia Antica, an area of Roman ruins which date from the early third century BC. Ostia became an important harbour town, supplying Rome. Over the years Ostia was struck by earthquakes and tsunamis. Instead of rebuilding ruins, the materials were often recycled, with Ostian marble even being used to build cathedrals in Pisa, Florence, Amalfi and Orvieto. The excavations here show many incredible layers of time.

To cool off after exploring the ruins, we will head to Lido di Ostia. Spend your time here at the beach swimming, sunbathing (or studying?!); exploring the shops; people watching in the cafes, or strolling along the promenade.

As we’ll be spending time at the beach, be sure to leave valuables at the hotel. Please wear comfortable shoes and a sun hat, and bring your sunscreen and beach apparel. We will return to Rome for dinner.

Leaving Naples, you will cross the valley of Mount Vesuvius, passing through the villages of Ercolano (Herculaneum), Torre del Greco and Torre Annunziata before arriving in Pompeii.

Nestled at the foot of Mount Vesuvius is Pompeii. Throughout the height of the Roman Empire, it was quite the lively city. As a result of a volcanic eruption, the town was covered in molten lava and ultimately “frozen in time.” The city lay silent for almost two thousand years until it was excavated hundreds of years later. A picture of life in Roman times was revealed.

What lay beneath was the town of Pompeii, perfectly preserved as a result of the layer of volcanic ash that had covered it for centuries. Today it remains one of the most compelling archaeological sites and by far one of the most visited Italian attractions.

Visiting Pompeii is an incredible experience. We will take a guided tour of the site, where we will see the houses, theatres, arenas, temples, and public buildings where its original inhabitants lived, worked, played, and worshipped.

We will depart from Rome after breakfast and travel approximately four hours south to Pompeii. We will return to Rome in time for a late dinner at the hotel.
