Global High School 2016-17 Term 3:

First Week in Sydney

Hello everyone,

What a great first week we have had!

As we settle into our new home, new classes, new roles, and our new family,

I think we can confidently state that we have overcome the jet lag and are ready to be fully immersed into the Australian culture.

This past week has been filled with the perfect mix of adventure and academics.  For starters, our amazing teachers led all of our students on a 45 min hike to Double Bay Beach for afternoon classes on Thursday.  We’ve also had classes in the rooftop pool of our hostel, cafes in the neighbourhood, and the private conference room available to us at Sydney Central YHA. Students have been doing a phenomenal job juggling excursions, jet lag, and assignments.  They have already become very close with one another in such a short time!

Friday morning we decided to take the students on a beautiful coastal walk from Coogee beach to the famous Bondi Beach.  After a quick 20-minute bus ride to Coogee beach, we started our 1.5 hour walking journey.  Walking north up the east coast was visually stunning.  We couldn’t help but stop every few minutes to snap some photos of the picturesque views.  Other stops consisted of filling up our water bottles, and running through sprinklers 😉

By the end of the walk, we were all ready to dive in to the waters of the white sand beach. We enjoyed the village-style surf town until early evening, at which point we returned to Sydney Central.  It was an amazing and successful day for all! Due to the fact that we had to take advantage of Friday’s weather and use it for the coastal walk, we will now make Sunday a regular school day with full classes.

Yesterday we enjoyed a relaxing Saturday.  Some students caught up on homework, did some shopping, and tried some new restaurants in town.  We also had a group go to Manly Beach for a two-hour surf lesson! Though it was a rainy day, it didn’t stop our newfound surfer students. They came back from Manly beach smiling ear to ear and feeling accomplished. Pictures to be posted on Vidigami very soon!

I hope everyone is doing well back home. Until next update…

Alex,

Program Manager
