2016-17 Term 2: Southern Europe
Our term begins with an exploration of classical Greece. We’ll visit the mighty Acropolis and Parthenon, the Temple of Zeus and the ancient Agora. At the bazaar, we’ll taste delectable local delights, such as cheese, and in Plaka, the city’s oldest district, we’ll shop.
In Kalamata, the Aegean Sea provides a stunning backdrop for our studies and is a gorgeous site to swim and catch some sun every day. We’ll take a day trip to Olympia, the site of the first Olympic Games. There will be visits to the impressive Byzantine ruins at Mystras, and the Temple of Athena in once-mighty Sparta.
Across the Mediterranean, on Crete, Greece’s largest island, we’ll rejuvenate on dazzling beaches, swimming in the clear blue waters and playing beach sports.
We then head to Italy and its capital city of Rome, with its imposing Colosseum and Forum, and visit Vatican City and its Sistine Chapel. During our time in the Eternal City, we’ll gain invaluable insights into ancient Rome’s political, religious and commercial past. We’ll also hike in the Roman hills for splendid views of the city, wander the city’s gardens, and toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain for good luck.
From Rome, we head to Florence, the final destination of the term. There, we’ll explore the Ponte Vecchio, the city’s iconic bridge; shop in local markets while enjoying authentic gelato; and admire the masterpieces, including Michelangelo’s David, at the Accademia Gallery.
While in Florence, we’ll take day trips to Siena and Venice, where we’ll enjoy the gothic grace of the Duomo in Siena and explore the Grand Canal and St. Mark’s Square as we walk through the maze-like streets of Venice.

From Athens: Corinth and the Corinth Canal, w/o Bungee Jumping ($175.00) or with Bungee Jumping (additional $145.00)
The Corinth Canal cuts between the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf. 4 miles long, 21 metres wide and 90 metres high, this is an incredible feature of the landscape.
We will spend the day exploring the historic town of Corinth. Once an important town in ancient Greece, many of the ancient sights remaining today are Roman, and we’ll explore the ruins of Temple of Apollo and the Temple of Octavia. Modern Corinth now sits to the north of the ruins on a picturesque bay, and we’ll have some free time to wander through the shops and along the seashore promenade.
*Corinth and the Corinth Canal – Bungee Jumping!*
*Over the narrow canal is a bridge and from here the daredevils amongst us can take a leap and bungee jump. Feel the adrenaline rush as you leap toward the azure blue water beneath you!
Price: Additional $145.00
Anticipated Date: Saturday October 29 2016
From Kalamata: Diros Caves ($165.00)
Experience an incredible voyage through the unknown worlds of the fantastic Diros Caves. Float through the many passages and halls of the wonderful Glyphada cave, voted the most beautiful cave-lake in Europe. This is nature at its grandest, for no artist or sculptor could replicate the colours and formations of the stalagmites and stalactites.
We will also have time to enjoy the beach and explore the nearby town of Pyrgos Dirou. The group will depart from Kalamata by bus and return in time for dinner.
A favorite excursion among our students!
Anticipated Date: Saturday November 5 2016
From Rome: Weekend on the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii (2 nights) ($995.00)
We will leave for the Amalfi Coast on Friday and spend a wonderful weekend exploring this beautiful coastline. Our base will be Sorrento, a coastal town perched on top of cliffs. The narrow streets are home to cafes, restaurants and shops. On arrival in Sorrento we will have a guided walking tour of the town.
On Saturday we will hop on a ferry and cross to the stunning island of Capri. We will take a cable car up to the heights of Mount Solaro to wander the peaceful streets and get a beautiful view of Mount Vesuvius from across the Gulf of Naples. You will then have the rest of the afternoon to stroll the streets of Anacapri and enjoy an espresso with stunning views, or take a boat tour around the island. Regardless of how you spend your afternoon, this visit to Capri will be unforgettable.
On Sunday before we return to Rome we will spend the morning exploring the incredible ruins of Pompeii. This vast archaeological site was once a thriving city in Roman times, before being buried in ash when nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. While most people had time to escape, those who remained are now frozen in time. Our guide will tell us more about this fascinating historic site.
Anticipated Date: Friday November 25 2016 to Sunday November 27 2016
From Florence: A Day in Pisa ($195.00)
We will enjoy a wonderful day exploring the charming plazas of Pisa famed for its Leaning Tower, with a private guide. Climb the 300 spiral steps to make it to the top of this famed tower for a beautiful view of the city. Already tilting when it was completed in 1372, the white marble structure is the bell tower of the stunning cathedral beside it, located in the Square of Miracles. This plaza is truly dazzling when the sun is shining and the light reflects off the marble in contrast to the lush green of the perfect grass in the plaza.
Stroll beside the River Arno and try the local delicacy of ‘cecina’ with a tasty gelato in hand. There will be lots of time for us to take some memorable (and funny!) photos of this unique building. Start thinking of some funny poses now!
Anticipated Date: Sunday December 4 2016
